NEW YORK – The Heisman Trophy will be handed out on Saturday night in New York and a former North Texas high school star could be bringing home the hardware.
Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty is one of four finalists for the Heisman Trophy.
Jeanty was a star at Frisco Lone Star High School before taking college football by storm this season.
In the 2021-2022 season for Frisco Lone Star, the running back ran for 1,835 in 12 games and scored 31 touchdowns.
The Heisman would complete a busy awards season for Jeanty, who already won the Maxwell Award, which is given to college football’s top player and the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the country’s best running back.
“This is one of the goals I set out to do. I knew I would be here in New York to potentially win this award,” Jeanty told reporters.
The running back leads the nation with 2,496 rushing yards, just 132 shy of Barry Sanders’ NCAA record.

Jeanty was a driving force behind Boise State’s 12-1 season. The Broncos are the 9 seed in this year’s College Football Playoff.
Jeanty’s former high school coach Jeff Rayburn did not hesitate when asked who should hoist this year’s Heisman.
“There’s no doubt he deserves to be the Heisman trophy winner. With what he’s done, statistically, leading his team to a conference championship, leading his team to the College Football Playoffs. [Jeanty’s] the best player on one of the best teams in the country” said Rayburn. “What he’s done and the impact he’s had on his team, surpasses that of anybody else I think is out there.”
