A recently approved $94 million project that will widen Alamo Ranch Parkway aims to ease congestion on San Antonio’s rapidly growing northwest area.
The scope of the proposed project includes widening the full 2.4-mile roadway from four to eight lanes, as well as adding overpasses at three intersections. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2027, according to a presentation given to the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority board on Dec. 5.
The board approved a plan this month to use $140 million in ARMA funds and $190 million from other sources to advance several new transit projects in San Antonio, including the Alamo Ranch Parkway project. ARMA is a governing body within Bexar County that is responsible for overseeing the planning, development and implementation of transportation projects in the San Antonio region.
ARMA officials estimate that the expansion could cut travel times on the parkway by as much as 75%. ARMA will now need to hire consultants for the design phase of the project.
In addition to the Alamo Ranch Parkway improvements, ARMA board members also approved several other projects.
The board approved $1.1 million for preliminary engineering of a $57 million overpass project at Walzem Road and Union Pacific railroad tracks, aimed at reducing train-related delays. The engineering work is required to apply for a Federal Railroad Administration grant.
The board also approved $7 million for design and right-of-way acquisition for a $52 million expansion of Evans Road, a four-mile stretch on the city’s Northeast Side. That project will be completed in two phases.
