Raise Awareness for Organ Donation at Medical City Dallas

DALLAS – In observance of Donate Life Month, Medical City Dallas is dedicated to increasing awareness about the urgent need for individuals to register as organ donors.

The Journey of Jeremy Curson: A Heartfelt Story

Jeremy Curson, at 50 years old, faced a life-altering diagnosis of congestive heart failure that led to the need for a heart transplant. Since December 7, he has remained in the hospital, and on March 1, a donor was found, providing him a second chance at life.

Reflecting on his situation, Curson stated, “If I did not have this opportunity, instead of talking to you, I’d be 6 feet under right now. Once I get out of here, I’m going to make myself a donor. I wasn’t before. Someone gave me a second chance. I want to give that back.”

In gratitude, Curson intends to write a letter to the family of his donor: “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for that person.”

Why It Matters

Dr. Claudio Bravo, the transplant medical director at Medical City Dallas, emphasizes the transformative impact of organ transplantation for patients suffering from severe heart conditions. Before receiving a transplant, the survival rate for these patients is less than 10%, which significantly increases to over 80% afterwards.

However, Bravo notes a troubling reality: “Unfortunately, the number of donors is small compared to the number of patients waiting for transplant.”

Statistics to Consider

  • In the United States, approximately 100,000 individuals are currently on the waitlist for organ transplants.
  • On average, 17 people die every day while awaiting a transplant.

How You Can Help

According to Crystal Gibbs, manager of the Heart Transplant Department at Medical City, it is crucial for individuals to communicate their wishes regarding organ donation with their families. She warns, “If you are in an accident or something happens tragically, and your family is forced to have to decide in a moment where they are devastated, your brains don’t work the same in a tragic situation.”
