Sonal Shah to Depart from The Texas Tribune by December 2025
As the landscape of local journalism faces unprecedented challenges, Sonal Shah, CEO of The Texas Tribune, has announced her intention to step down by December 2025. Shah’s leadership, which commenced in early 2023, has focused on expanding the Tribune’s reach and restoring trust in local news.
Reflecting on Leadership and Community Connections
During her tenure, Shah has highlighted the vital role The Texas Tribune plays in connecting Texans with critical information about their governance and communities. “Leading The Texas Tribune has been one of the great honors of my life,” Shah remarked, expressing her deep commitment to the publication’s mission.
Her leadership has coincided with a significant investment in local journalism, resulting in the recent establishment of newsrooms in Austin and Waco. This initiative was designed to ensure that all Texans, regardless of their location, have access to trustworthy, fact-based reporting that resonates with their lives.
The Response to Local Journalism Challenges
Shah acknowledged a growing disconnect among communities regarding trust in media institutions. She noted that many people feel increasingly isolated from trustworthy news sources, as local journalism continues to diminish. In response, The Texas Tribune has actively sought to build relationships within various communities, simultaneously expanding its operational presence and focusing on comprehensive coverage across the state.
In addition to physical expansions, the Tribune has embraced modern tools, including artificial intelligence and short-form video content, to reach readers where they are.
Plans for a Smooth Transition
Shah’s decision to step back is rooted in personal reasons, as she intends to move back to Houston to care for her parents. She assured the community of her commitment to a seamless leadership transition, stating, “Until then, my focus will be on ensuring a smooth transition—strengthening our leadership team, integrating our local newsrooms, raising the funds needed to sustain our work.”
Message from the Board Chair
Trei Brundrett, the chair of the board, expressed gratitude for Shah’s contributions, stating, “We are immensely grateful to Sonal Shah for leading the Texas Tribune over the past two years.” He acknowledged her efforts in fortifying the Tribune’s journalistic integrity and developing a forward-looking strategy aimed at enhancing local news coverage.
The search for Shah’s successor will begin immediately, as the board aims to find a leader who can continue the ambitious trajectory established under her guidance.
Upcoming Events and Future Initiatives
Looking ahead, Shah is set to oversee the upcoming Texas Tribune Festival, scheduled for November 13-15 in downtown Austin, where discussions on pressing state issues will take center stage. Tickets for this significant event are currently on sale.
