Síclovía: San Antonio’s Revitalizing Car-Free Event Returns
On March 23, residents of San Antonio can once again participate in Síclovía, an annual event that encourages outdoor activity along a car-free route. This year marks the 23rd iteration of the initiative, which is organized by the YMCA of Greater San Antonio.
Running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event will shut down Broadway from McCullough to Mahncke Park, providing a safe space for a variety of activities. Participants are invited to walk, run, bike, or skateboard along a designated 2.2-mile stretch.
Community Engagement: Activities and Vendors
This year, attendees will find activation zones, known as Reclovia sites, at various locations including Mahncke Park, Lions Field, Maverick Park, River North, and the KLRN studios parking lot. At these sites, participants can engage in health and wellness activities, enter giveaways, and shop from local vendors.
Shannon Gowen, the Y’s vice president of marketing and communications, expressed enthusiasm about returning to Broadway after previous events took place in alternative downtown locations. “It’s a beloved event that, year after year, the community still gets excited about,” said Gowen. “Whether you’ve been every year since 2011, or this would be your first time, there is guaranteed to be something for everyone.”
A Focus on Health
Part of the initiative involves health promotion. This year, the City of San Antonio’s Metro Health team will provide free measles vaccinations for attendees. Additionally, KLRN studios will host storytelling booths as part of celebrating the YMCA’s 150th anniversary. Here, guests can share their personal stories relating to the Y’s impact on their lives.
Local Organizations Join the Celebration
Several local groups are set to participate in Síclovía, including:
Mara Saldivar, founder of Roll Out SA, reflected on the community spirit observed at previous events, saying, “Every year that we participated, I’ve always thought it was beautiful that you see all kinds of people out there.” This initiative helps groups like Roll Out SA increase their visibility and attract potential new members.
Similarly, Move Club San Antonio, which focuses on physical activity and mental well-being, sees alignment with their mission through this event. Co-founder Xavier Vara noted the significance of Síclovía in promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Earn-A-Bike San Antonio, dedicated to providing local youth with cycling education and safety practices, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the event’s connection to exploring sustainable transportation alternatives.
Rediscovering Urban Spaces
The central concept of Síclovía is to reclaim city streets for community activities, transforming them into vibrant spaces free from vehicular traffic. This makes it easier for residents to experience the joy of active living.
