Celebrating 20 Years of Girls on the Run in DFW
This morning, Plano witnessed an inspiring event as hundreds of girls participated in the annual Girls on the Run 5K at Oak Point Park. The occasion marked a significant milestone: 20 years of the program in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Event Overview
More than 700 participants, including girls, coaches, teachers, and family members, gathered to celebrate their dedication and achievements. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with enthusiasm and a shared goal of crossing the finish line.
A Heartfelt Volunteer Appreciation
Shannon Murray from FOX 4, a dedicated volunteer with the organization, served as the race announcer, adding to the event’s spirited ambiance. Attendees could enjoy fun activities, including hair decorations at the “happy hair station” and customizing their race bibs at the “bling your bib” station.
Voices from the Event
Allison Gnade, Executive Director of Girls on the Run, expressed her emotional connection to the event: “I have been involved with the organization for 10 years and I normally watch from the finish line in tears to watch the girls with their families.” Her reflections highlight the transformative impact the program has on the lives of young girls.
April Massett, Vice President of Council Development, emphasized the broader significance of the program: “This is amazing. It’s a culmination of weeks of training and connection, and the confidence that girls experience with their community here in Plano is what girls are doing across the U.S. and Canada.” Massett noted the importance of celebrating achievements together.
