On April 2, Austin Metcalf, a junior at Memorial High School, tragically lost his life during a UIL District 11-5A track meet at Kuykendall Stadium. According to law enforcement, the fatal incident occurred as a result of a confrontation between Austin and another student, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony from Centennial High School, who allegedly stabbed Metcalf in the chest.

Authorities have arrested Anthony, who faces charges of first-degree murder and is currently held in Collin County Jail with a bond set at $1 million.

About Austin Metcalf

Austin was celebrated as an accomplished student and athlete, known for his leadership on and off the field. His father, Jeff Metcalf, described him as an honor student and a respected leader on the school’s football team, where he played as a linebacker. Austin was also actively involved in track and field, working to improve his speed.

Reflecting on their recent family outing, Jeff shared, “I’m so fortunate to be able to spend that weekend, not knowing it was the last weekend I’ll ever spend with him. My other son is just crushed. I feel for him now; he won’t be the same. None of us will.”

The emotional impact of Austin’s passing was evident in the response from the community, with many showing support during his hospital visitation.

The Memorable Last Moments

Austin’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, recounted the harrowing experience of losing his brother. He stated, “I put my hand there. I grabbed his hand and looked in his eyes. I just saw his soul leave, and it took mine too.”

The events leading up to the stabbing are believed to have stemmed from a disagreement in the stands regarding seating arrangements, leading to a confrontation between the two students.

Family’s Response to the Incident

In the aftermath, Jeff Metcalf expressed his desire for justice while also extending forgiveness to the individual accused of his son’s death. He stated, “I’ve already forgiven the person that stabbed him. God’s gonna take care of everything. God’s taking care of my son.”

He expressed a sense of compassion for Karmelo Anthony’s family, highlighting the tragedy of the situation for both families involved.
