Reverchon Park: A Legacy Revived for Baseball Enthusiasts

Dallas’ Reverchon Park, a historic site for baseball that dates back over a century, has undergone a significant revitalization. This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to preserving recreational spaces as the metroplex continues to thrive.

The Renovation Project

In response to growing concerns over the park’s deterioration and potential development threats, the City of Dallas collaborated with Dallas Independent School District (DISD) to restore this cherished location. The extensive renovations aimed to modernize facilities while maintaining the park’s historical significance.

  • Replacement of old steel beams dating back 70 years.
  • Upgrades to ballfields, including new irrigation systems.
  • Installation of modern fencing, lighting, and scoreboards.

Community Celebrations

On April 26, city officials, community leaders, and local alumni gathered to celebrate the park’s reopening. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was highlighted by the presence of dignitaries, including Parks and Recreation Director John Jenkins.

Jenkins remarked on the integral role of community involvement, stating, “We renovated. We’re talking about steel that was put in here 70 years ago, and we were able to preserve and put in new steel, able to preserve the grandstand. We upgraded the ballfields, put in new irrigation, resodded, put in new fencing, new lighting, a new scoreboard.”

A Collective Effort

Michael Hinojosa, former superintendent of DISD, highlighted the community’s perseverance in bringing the park back to life: “It was almost snatched away from us until people spoke up and pulled this off, and it’s amazing.”

Reflections from Former Players

Among the attendees was Bo Weaver, a former player who celebrated a state championship in 1965. Weaver shared his emotional connection to the park: “From 62 to 69. I played many, many games here at Reverchon… So, it’s a touching, sentimental thing, yeah.”
