Drone Show Canceled For Dallas New Year's Eve Celebration

A North Texas drone company will not be flying during Dallas’ Lone Star New Year’s Eve show.

Sky Elements Drones informed Reunion Tower they would not be flying the drones “out of an abundance of caution.”

What We Know: The move comes less than a week after a drone hit a 7-year-old boy in Orlando, Florida during a holiday drone show.

The Orlando show was also managed by Sky Elements Drones.

The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating why several drones collided and fell during that show.

What They’re Saying: “Sky Elements Drones informed us that they will not be able to fly their New Year’s Eve show at Reunion Tower. They are doing this out of an abundance of caution following a recent incident and as they review processes for future shows,” Reunion Tower president Dusti Groskreutz said. “Viewers can plan to see Reunion Tower’s 259 LED light show and fireworks spectacular NYE.”

The Background: The drone show in Orlando was authorized by the FAA.

According to the agency, drone arrays and light shows ar subject to FAA regulations and typically require a waiver that allows multiple drones to be operated at once.

Last month, Sky Elements Drones set a world record for the largest aerial display of a gingerbread village made from drones.

4,981 drones were used to make the holiday display.
