Congo Falls: San Antonio Zoo’s Innovative Gorilla Habitat

After more than three years of construction, San Antonio Zoo is nearing the completion of its latest exhibit, Congo Falls. This endeavor marks a significant investment and commitment to both animal welfare and visitor experience, as it prepares to welcome eight Western lowland gorillas later in the year.

Project Overview

Spanning over two acres within the zoo’s Africa section, Congo Falls stands as the largest habitat ever constructed at the San Antonio Zoo, which has been serving the community for 111 years. Designed by the St. Louis-based architecture firm PGAV Destinations and constructed by Guido Construction, this exhibition aims to replicate a natural environment suitable for its future residents.

Progress and Developments

According to Ben Barton, the zoo’s director of capital construction, substantial progress has been made, with major structures such as walls and steel beams being erected. The Ralston Event Center, adjacent to Congo Falls, is reported to be 85% complete and will offer a premium space for events with a capacity of 500 attendees.

Visitor Experience and Event Center Features

Visitors attending events in the new center will enjoy panoramic views of the gorilla habitat, featuring an outdoor patio that offers stunning sights of a waterfall and the San Antonio skyline. This innovative design intends to create an immersive experience, blurring the lines between animals and humans, as stated by Barton: “What we’re trying to do is blur those lines. Who’s in whose exhibit? Am I in yours? Or are you in mine?”

Habitat Design and Animal Welfare

Congo Falls prioritizes the welfare of its gorilla inhabitants through thoughtful design. The centerpiece, known as the Mays Family Silverback Peak, offers climbing opportunities for gorillas, reflecting their natural behavior of climbing and exploring above the forest canopy. The facility is being developed in accordance with standards set by leading animal welfare organizations.

Innovations for the Future

This project isn’t just representative of physical enhancements at the zoo; it also reflects a deeper commitment to conservation and education. “This is a one-of-a-kind in the world,” expressed Hope Roth, vice president of marketing, sales, and communication, highlighting its significance for wildlife preservation and public education.

Bringing Gorillas Back to San Antonio

Notably, Congo Falls will reintroduce gorillas to San Antonio for the first time since 1990. The zoo will receive a family group comprising a silverback male and three females, alongside four teenage males from multiple cities, including Houston and Atlanta, all coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ species survival planning group.

Conclusion

Congo Falls signifies a transformative chapter for the San Antonio Zoo, promising to enhance community engagement while fostering awareness and understanding of wildlife. With a planned opening later this year, the exhibit is poised to become a central attraction for visitors, allowing them to connect with these magnificent creatures in an environment designed with their natural behaviors in mind.
