Dallas Mavericks’ Future: Arena Development and Team Updates

DALLAS – Dallas Mavericks CEO Rick Welts, alongside general manager Nico Harrison, addressed reporters on Tuesday, focusing on the team’s future, particularly regarding its superstar Luka Dončić and the proposed construction of a new arena.

Upcoming Arena Plans

Amid ongoing speculation regarding the Mavericks’ future location after their lease at the American Airlines Center concludes in 2031, Welts shared insights into the planned “new arena entertainment district.” He emphasized that the momentum towards establishing a new venue has not received the attention it deserves.

Welts confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the city of Dallas to identify 30 to 50 acres suitable for the new arena. A potential site is a parcel of land in Irving owned by a company associated with Las Vegas Sands, which is governed by Patrick Dumont, the Mavericks’ owner.

“I think the progress we’ve made to date makes me very encouraged that we’re going to find that location within the boundaries of the city of Dallas,” Welts stated, expressing optimism for the project aimed for completion by the 2031-2032 season.

This new venue is also projected to serve as a multi-purpose facility, hosting not just basketball games but a variety of entertainment events.

Impact of Gambling Legislation on the New Arena

The Mavericks’ ownership, involving the Adelson and Dumont families, has a significant background in the casino industry. While Las Vegas Sands previously proposed integrating a resort and casino with the new arena, the current climate suggests that gambling legislation is unlikely to be approved in Texas in the immediate future.

Welts pointed out that the plans for the arena will proceed regardless of any potential changes in gambling laws: “We’re full speed ahead, with or without any legislation that permits casino gambling in Texas. So we’re going to build absolutely the best facility for the Mavericks going forward.”

Collaboration with the Dallas Stars

As the Mavericks continue to play at the American Airlines Center, Welts indicated a willingness to collaborate with the Dallas Stars to enhance the arena. However, he also expressed a strong inclination towards developing a dedicated basketball facility in the future.

“If you design a basketball-only facility, you’re not working around the larger geometry of a hockey rink. For the experience of going to Mavericks games, we think the best option would be to build a basketball-first facility,” he remarked.

Final Thoughts

With the ambitious goal of a new arena on the horizon, the Dallas Mavericks are focused on ensuring a top-tier venue for sports and entertainment, addressing both fan needs and business goals. As discussions continue, all eyes will be on the developments leading up to 2031.
