From Health Scare to New Beginnings: Eric Prisbell’s Inspiring Journey

Renowned North Texas sports writer Eric Prisbell has dedicated years to covering basketball across the United States. However, a serious health issue last year forced him to reevaluate his priorities and focus on recovery.

At 48, Prisbell showcases impressive endurance on the treadmill, a stark contrast to his earlier struggles with physical activity.

Confronting Heart Disease

A diagnosis of coronary artery disease dramatically altered Prisbell’s life. Tragically, he lost his father to the same disease at the young age of 57. After undergoing double bypass surgery, he was motivated to change his lifestyle.

Prisbell’s journey to recovery began with his participation in the cardiac rehabilitation program at Texas Health Allen.

Building a Support Network

At the cardiac rehab clinic, he forged a strong bond with two dedicated clinicians, Sierra Proctor and Jaclyn Raibick, who played pivotal roles in his recovery.

During the three months he spent there, attending sessions three times a week, their friendship blossomed. Together, the trio took part in a monthly 5K race, with Prisbell often serving as an unofficial coach and accountability partner.

Statistics on Heart Disease

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), coronary heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming nearly 372,000 lives in 2022. Alarmingly, about 20% of deaths from cardiovascular diseases occur in individuals under the age of 65.

With determination, Prisbell is committed to avoiding becoming part of these statistics.

Renewed Perspective

Prisbell has expressed how severe his condition was before his surgery and subsequent rehabilitation. “Something was wrong. I could not climb to the second floor of my house without becoming out of breath,” he recalled. Post-surgery, he described his recovery as a “new lease on life.”

He attributes much of his positive outlook to the structure and support provided by the cardiac rehab program. “Cardiac rehab has been a tremendous help. It has given me the belief, it’s given me the structure to really transform my life,” he shared.

Encouraging Others

Both Proctor and Raibick have noted the enthusiasm and positivity Prisbell brings to their interactions. Proctor mentioned, “He waits at the finish line for us since he’s a lot faster than us; he cheers us on, so it’s super cool to have that group bond together.”

Raibick added that Prisbell’s encouragement has been motivating, stating, “Sometimes I’ll slack a bit and text him, and he’ll say, ‘you’ve got this.’ He’s coaching us now sometimes.”

Looking Ahead

While Prisbell may no longer be training within the facility, he continues to participate in 5K races, recently finishing fifth in his age group. His goal by the end of the year is to achieve first place.

Reflecting on his journey, Prisbell states, “I’ve come a long way but the best news for me is the best is yet to come.”
