Operation Border Health 2025 Canceled

Funding cuts force halt to South Texas’ largest free healthcare event

Laredo, TX — The Texas Department of StateHealth Services has officially canceled Operation Border Health 2025, a free medical clinic that has served South Texas families for over two decades. The event was scheduled to run July 21–25 at Christen Middle School in Laredo.

Budget shortfall ends 20-year tradition

Due to a reduction in federal funding and a statewide hiring freeze that eliminated 22 positions, DSHS was unable to support this year’s deployment. The loss marks the first cancellation since the program began in 2001.

Vital services, now unavailable

Operation Border Health delivered more than 26,000 health services last year alone—including dental work, physicals, immunizations, and veterinary care—valued at over $1 million. Local leaders say they are exploring community-based alternatives, but none have been finalized.

Regional impact and response

Laredo city officials acknowledged the cancellation is a significant setback for uninsured and underserved residents. Health providers are urging the state to reinstate funding in 2026.
