Major Police Bust Reveals Illegal Operations in San Antonio Strip Mall
In a significant police operation conducted over the weekend, authorities in San Antonio uncovered a series of illegal activities including the possession of firearms, an underground fighting ring, and unauthorized alcohol sales at a Westside strip mall establishment.
Surveillance and Investigation
The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) initiated surveillance on the suspicious venue starting in November after local residents reported unusual late-night activities, which led to a detailed investigation.
Reports highlighted concerning activities such as:
- Sounds of gunfire
- Presence of long AR-style rifles
- Underage drinking
- Physical altercations in the backyard
- Individuals in bulletproof vests identified as security
Community Impact
“This is kind of jarring for someone to see right outside of their neighborhood,” expressed SAPD Sgt. Washington Moscoso, indicating the impact such illegal activities have on local communities.
The establishment, located adjacent to Lackland Air Force Base, had been described by locals as a hub for illicit activities, evidenced by social media posts showing “UFC-style” fights occurring within.
Police Action
Following observations from undercover units that included the SAPD Covert and Texas Anti-Gang units, significant evidence was documented. On February 28, the police began their operations, quickly identifying weapons and suspicious behavior.
A dramatic event occurred as police monitored the movements of potential suspects. Officers followed a vehicle associated with the establishment, which culminated in a confrontation where one suspect aimed a firearm at officers. The police returned fire, although no one was harmed during the exchange. Following a brief foot chase, two suspects were apprehended.
Subsequent Police Response
On Saturday, SAPD arrived at the site with a strong police presence. During their efforts to secure the area, shots were fired towards the officers from inside the building.
As officers attempted to detain a suspect who exited through the back door with a firearm, the individual pointed the weapon towards police. An officer returned fire, causing the suspect to retreat back inside the establishment, where he later surrendered after a lengthy standoff.
Approximately five other individuals managed to exit the venue during this time. A 28-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested on a felony weapons charge, while another suspect remained hospitalized and under investigation.
Conclusion and Future Actions
The operation has garnered community attention, with residents expressing relief at the police intervention. Posts surrounding the bust on social media reflected a general sentiment of expectation regarding the ongoing illegal activities.
“If individuals have concerns in their neighborhood or if there’s a business in their neighborhood that’s a nuisance, call the police. If there’s a pattern and if there’s a persistent problem, it will escalate and we will look into it,” stated Moscoso.
The investigation continues as the SAPD aims to address ongoing community safety concerns and prevent future incidents.
