Firefighters Successfully Contain Wildfires in South Bexar County
On Wednesday, fire crews continued their efforts to extinguish two wildfires on the South Side of Bexar County, Texas. These wildfires were fueled by extreme winds that intensified on Tuesday, leading local officials to implement mandatory evacuations and establish an emergency shelter.
Status Updates on Wildfires
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, both fires were reported to be approximately 90% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. By Thursday, officials confirmed that the blazes had been completely contained.
Details of the Fires
Calaveras Fire
The Calaveras Fire, which affected an area near Interstate 37 and Southton Road, burned approximately 284 acres. Reports indicate that at least three residential structures—including a mobile home—sustained damage due to the fire.
Duke Fire
Similarly, the Duke Fire impacted 244 acres, with about 40 acres located within neighboring Atascosa County. The Bexar County Public Information Office shared that six habitable structures were completely destroyed as a result of this fire.
Community Response and Ongoing Support
In response to the destruction caused by the wildfires, displaced families are receiving assistance from Bexar County’s Economic and Community Development Office. At this time, officials have not provided a monetary assessment of the total damages incurred.
As firefighting efforts wind down, residents who evacuated due to the wildfires have been permitted to return to their homes. More than 50 emergency responders were actively working on the scene to mitigate any remaining hotspots as of Wednesday evening.
