The Colony police say a homeless man camping out in an empty field during the winter weather was killed in a fire.

Homeless Man Dies in Fire

What we know:

Police say they received several 911 calls Friday around 6 a.m. about a brushfire in an empty field between Home Depot and Rooms To Go off State Highway 121.

Once firefighters extinguished the flames, a homeless man was found dead in the debris.

Investigators believe the man was sleeping on a mattress when it caught on fire by the nearby flames.

That wooded area appeared to be used as a homeless encampment.

The area received 3-5 inches of snow since Thursday. Temperatures Thursday night into Friday morning fell below freezing.

What we don’t know:

The name of the victim has not been released until next of kin are notified.

It’s unclear what caused the original fire in the empty field.
