Prabhas Moghe Nominated as Sole Finalist for UT-Dallas Presidency
The University of Texas System Board of Regents has officially nominated Prabhas Moghe, currently serving as the chief academic officer at Rutgers University, as the sole finalist for the presidency at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT-Dallas).
This unanimous decision by the Regents occurred on a Wednesday, following the announcement that Richard C. Benson, the current president of UT-Dallas, will be stepping down.
Next Steps in the Appointment Process
In accordance with Texas law, there will be a 21-day waiting period before Moghe is officially appointed to the role. The Board of Regents is expected to finalize his appointment shortly thereafter, with Moghe likely starting his presidency in the summer or early fall of 2025, as indicated in a university news release.
Background of Prabhas Moghe
Moghe’s recommendation comes from a presidential search advisory committee led by UT System Chancellor, JB Milliken. The committee highlighted his extensive leadership experience and robust academic background as compelling reasons for his nomination.
“Dr. Moghe’s record of strengthening educational pathways and propelling research agendas forward reflects many of UT Dallas’s strengths and continued aspirations. He has a deep appreciation for UTD’s mission and extraordinary ascendancy among top universities,”
With an academic career that began in 1995 at Rutgers University, Moghe has served in various capacities, including the distinguished professor of biomedical engineering and chemical and biochemical engineering. Since 2020, he has been the executive vice president for academic affairs, overseeing academic and research operations across the university’s four campuses.
Originally from Bombay, India, Moghe arrived in the United States as an international student at the University of Minnesota. Reflecting on his journey, he remarked:
“I had flown thousands of miles from the warmest place on the planet, to a country I had never visited,”
UT-Dallas: Current Context and Challenges
UT-Dallas, located in Richardson, is a public research university with an enrollment of 29,886 students from 130 countries as of the fall semester of 2024. Moghe’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the institution, especially following visa complications impacting international students earlier this year.
Many of these students faced visa revocations, with federal authorities reportedly targeting those involved in pro-Palestinian protests. Although a recent court ruling has temporarily restored several visas, the situation remains delicate.
Notably, the administration faced criticism after law enforcement was called to manage these protests, leading to arrests that stirred unrest within the student body.
Conclusion
As UT-Dallas prepares for a new leadership chapter under Prabhas Moghe, the university community is hopeful for a future that builds upon its strengths and navigates the challenges ahead.
