Heroic Golfer Rescues Fellow Player at Tournament
FERRIS, Texas – A remarkable act of bravery unfolded during a recent golf tournament when a senior from Ferris High School jumped into action to save a fellow competitor from drowning. This courageous deed is now being celebrated as an example of selflessness and community spirit.
Incident Overview
The event took place at Country View Golf Club in Lancaster, Texas, specifically on the seventh hole of the par-4 course. Angel Lucio, a dedicated golfer and senior at Ferris High, heard a fellow student’s distressing cries echoing from the water’s edge.
Without hesitation, Lucio sprinted down the hill, swiftly spotting a student from Crandall ISD who was struggling to stay afloat. “I didn’t think about it; I just jumped in,” Lucio recalled, demonstrating his instinctive response to a life-threatening situation.
Rescue and Aftermath
Upon reaching the stranded student, Lucio acted decisively, grabbing the young golfer by the arms and pulling him safely to shore. It was later revealed that the freshman had slipped into the water while attempting to retrieve his golf ball and didn’t have the ability to swim.
“He was just thankful that I got him out,” Lucio mentioned, reflecting on the immediate relief felt after the successful rescue.
Both students, still in their drenched clothes, chose to continue with the tournament following the incident, illustrating their resilience and dedication to the sport.
Recognition for Heroism
Lucio’s actions did not go unnoticed. His head golf coach, Russell Williams, came forward, amazed by the selflessness displayed by his student. “To me, it was a big deal,” said Williams. “He kind of plays it off a little bit because he’s humble and a great young man.”
After sharing the inspiring story with school officials, Lucio was awarded the title of Hero of the Month by the Ferris ISD Police Department. Despite the recognition, Lucio remained modest, stating, “For me, it was something that anyone else should have done — not just me.”
Golfing Success and Future Plans
During the tournament, Lucio managed to secure victory against his Crandall ISD opponent, playfully noting, “He owed me one,” in reference to the rescue. This season marks Lucio’s third on the Ferris golf team, and he balances his athletic commitments with playing tennis and operating his own western wear business.
Lucio is set to receive formal recognition during the upcoming Ferris ISD school board meeting next Tuesday, further underscoring the impact of his courageous actions beyond the golf course.
