April is Child Abuse Prevention Month: How You Can Make a Difference
April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month, a critical time to raise awareness about the issue of child abuse and neglect. Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) highlights the importance of community involvement in safeguarding children’s welfare.
Current Statistics on Child Abuse in Bexar County
While statewide statistics indicate some progress in combatting child abuse, Bexar County presents a concerning picture. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Bexar County recorded 4,800 confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect, earning it the distinction of the third-highest county in Texas for these tragic incidents. Alarmingly, during this period, five children lost their lives due to abuse and neglect; nearly half (48%) of the confirmed victims were aged four and under. Moreover, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of children removed from their homes compared to the previous year.
Understanding the Signs of Child Abuse
Recognizing the signs of child abuse is paramount. While unexplained injuries can be indicative, a range of behavioral and emotional symptoms can signify a deeper issue. Look for:
- Depression or anxiety
- Difficulty in trusting others
- Hostility or inappropriate anger expressions
- Poor hygiene and inappropriate sexual behaviors
Children from families facing continuous crises, such as poverty or unemployment, are at an increased risk for abuse and neglect.
The Impact of Foster Care on Children
Entering the foster care system can be a particularly traumatic experience for children. Often, they face separation from their caregivers, siblings, and familiar surroundings, leading to a significant emotional upheaval. The trauma of such transitions can compound the difficulties these children have already endured.
How You Can Get Involved
As community members, there are numerous ways to assist families in crisis. Offering support to those in need can alleviate their burdens and foster a more nurturing environment for children. Here’s what you can do:
- Check in with families who may be experiencing hardship.
- Be vigilant in observing any signs of neglect or abuse. If you suspect a child is in imminent danger, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1. To report allegations of abuse, reach out to the Texas Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400.
Advocating for Children: The Role of CASA Volunteers
CASA volunteers serve as vital advocates for children in foster care, providing much-needed stability and support. In the past year, CASA volunteers positively impacted the lives of 937 children. Your involvement can help ensure that every child has someone to rely on during challenging times.
Become a CASA Advocate
As a CASA volunteer, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of the child’s situation by interacting with family members, case workers, and educators. This role involves:
- Gathering information to inform the court effectively regarding the child’s best interests.
- Committing an average of 15 hours a month to visit the child and advocate on their behalf in court.
Candidates from all walks of life are encouraged to apply, and after training and being sworn in by a judge, volunteers will be equipped to serve children in need.
