Egg Prices Reach Record Highs in March 2023
March 2023 saw a significant increase in egg prices, reaching a startling average of $6.23 per dozen, according to the latest Consumer Price Index data. This surge comes despite a noted decrease in wholesale prices, which has caused concern among consumers and market analysts alike.
Current Egg Prices
The recent uptick in egg prices is particularly alarming given the current lack of bird flu outbreaks, which had previously impacted production. As Easter approaches on April 20, demand for eggs traditionally spikes, potentially exacerbating price pressures during this period.
Factors Behind the Price Surge
According to agricultural economist Jada Thompson from the University of Arkansas, wholesale egg prices began to decline only around mid-March. This delay may have contributed to the average consumer price remaining high, as grocery stores often take time to adjust their pricing to reflect market changes.
Furthermore, earlier months experienced severe impacts from bird flu, which compelled the culling of over 30 million egg-laying chickens. Although no affected farms reported issues in March, this earlier production loss has lingering effects as farms work to restore their flocks.
Price Trends Over the Past Months
In recent months, egg prices showed dramatic fluctuations. February recorded prices at $5.90 per dozen, following a peak of $4.95 in January, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some regions, particularly in California, have seen prices soar beyond $12 per dozen.
This price volatility underscores the challenges consumers face, especially when prices sank to as low as $2.04 per dozen in August 2023, only to rebound sharply this year.
