Dr. Karen Galley Recognized by HEB for Educational Excellence
A Surprise Excellence Award
In an inspiring moment for education, Dr. Karen Galley, a dedicated educator from North Texas, was recently honored with a surprise cash award from HEB for her exemplary work in the classroom. During her social studies class, the unexpected recognition was accompanied by $1,000 for both Dr. Galley and her school, enhancing the resources available for her students.
About Dr. Karen Galley
Dr. Galley teaches social studies at a school where many of her students are new arrivals from various parts of the world.
“The students at our school are amazing. They come from all over the world… the real key is making them feel comfortable and building a relationship with them,” she expressed, highlighting her commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Community Support and Recognition
The award presentation featured HEB spokesperson Emily Lynch, who announced, “Now we are here to present to her $1,000, and your campus also gets $1,000.” The funding is intended to support the ongoing educational efforts at the school.
Dr. Galley shared her excitement with her students, stating, “That’s money for the school!” which was met with applause and enthusiasm from those present.
Endorsements from Students and Administration
Superintendent Dr. Karen Molinar accompanied the surprise visit, emphasizing the significance of the award as a reflection of the district’s goals to enhance student achievement. “Some of them come here they can’t speak the language or write the language so they need extra support,” she explained, underscoring the necessity of tailored educational strategies.
Students also praised Dr. Galley’s teaching methods. Tenth grader Vung Heih Cing Kap, originally from Burma, noted, “She is very cool, fun with us and she teaches awesome.” Another student, ninth grader Justin Iradukunda, expressed, “She helps us to speak English, to learn,” illustrating Dr. Galley’s positive impact.
A Mutual Learning Experience
Dr. Galley reflects on her teaching journey by stating, “They learn from me, but I learned so much from them.” Her perspective emphasizes the reciprocal nature of education, where both teacher and student grow together.
Looking Ahead
Dr. Karen Galley is not only recognized locally; she is also a finalist for the prestigious HEB award. In May, she will travel to Austin, where she has the opportunity to win a larger prize of $25,000 for herself and an equal amount for her school if selected as the grand prize winner.
