Jimmy Johnson Retires from FOX NFL Sunday
DALLAS – Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson has officially announced his retirement from his role as a commentator on FOX NFL Sunday.
Announcement Details
Johnson disclosed his decision during an episode of The Herd on FS1. “I’ve made an extremely difficult decision,” he stated. “I’ve been thinking about it for the last 4 or 5 years and I’ve decided to retire from FOX. I’m going to miss it. I’m going to miss all of the guys.”
A Fond Farewell
The 81-year-old Johnson expressed that his time at FOX was the “most fun” he had throughout his career. His retirement announcement came shortly after the network aired a special tribute to him prior to the Super Bowl, hinting at the possibility of his departure.
When questioned about his retirement during the Super Bowl coverage, Johnson remained noncommittal, further adding to the anticipation of his eventual announcement.
A Long-standing Career in Broadcasting
Jimmy Johnson’s relationship with FOX began over three decades ago. After leaving the Cowboys, he was first with the network from 1994-1995. After a brief hiatus during his tenure with the Miami Dolphins, he returned to FOX from 2002 until his retirement in 2024.
Reflecting on his time with the network, Johnson remarked, “I loved every minute of it. Thanks to FOX Sports. It was really the best time of my entire career.”
Legacy and Impact
In a statement, FOX Sports CEO and Executive Producer Eric Shanks acknowledged Johnson’s profound influence, stating, “Jimmy served as an inspiration to generations of football fans with his legendary swagger, one-of-a-kind insight and signature humor. From his motivating pep talks to his unmatched energy over the years, he was our coach who always pushed us to be better.”
Shanks further emphasized the void left by Johnson’s departure, wishing him well as he embarks on this new chapter of his life.
