SMU Women’s Basketball Coach Toyelle Wilson Let Go After Challenging Season
DALLAS – Southern Methodist University (SMU) is set to embark on a new chapter as it has announced the departure of Toyelle Wilson from her position as head coach of the women’s basketball team.
Context of the Decision
This decision follows an underwhelming performance during the 2022-2023 season, where the Mustangs concluded with a 10-20 overall record, including a disappointing 2-16 in conference play. This was also SMU’s inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Leadership Transition
The announcement comes shortly after the recent appointment of Damon Evans as SMU’s athletic director. Wilson’s exit marks the end of her four-season tenure with the program.
In light of Wilson’s departure, SMU has initiated a national search to find a new head coach who will steer the program in a more competitive direction.
Official Statements
Damon Evans expressed gratitude towards Wilson, stating, “We appreciate Toyelle (Wilson) and her staff for their dedication and positive impact on SMU, our student-athletes, and our women’s basketball program over the past four seasons. Their commitment to integrity and the well-being of our student-athletes has been invaluable.” He further recognized the challenges the team faced, indicating the need for competitive performance: “However, with the investments the university and our donors have made in support of SMU Athletics, we have shown we belong in the ACC and expect to compete for championships.”
Looking Ahead
Evans also emphasized the potential that the university offers, including its prime location in Dallas, high-quality facilities, and available name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities for student-athletes. He concluded that these assets position SMU well to align with the nation’s leading programs.
