Investigation Launched into East Plano Islamic Center by Texas Governor
On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced a criminal investigation targeting the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC). This marks the fifth such investigation he has initiated in just one week.
Details of the Investigation
Governor Abbott has tasked the Texas Rangers with probing EPIC and associated organizations for “potential criminal activities.” However, he did not specify the legal violations being investigated, and his office has yet to respond to numerous requests for clarification regarding the focus of this inquiry.
“Texas is a law-and-order state, and those scheming to evade law enforcement scrutiny must know justice is awaiting them,” Abbott stated in a press release. “That is why I directed the Texas Rangers to fully investigate the group behind the proposed EPIC compound for potentially violating criminal law. Texas will ensure that anyone affiliated with EPIC who is breaking the law is brought to justice.”
Context of the Investigations
Following a post on X (formerly Twitter), Abbott revealed that multiple state agencies are investigating the mosque and its ambitious project known as “EPIC City” for alleged illegal activities.
EPIC City, proposed to be located in Josephine—approximately 40 miles northeast of Dallas—aims to feature not only a new mosque but also over 1,000 residential units, a K-12 faith-based school, senior housing options, an outreach center, commercial developments, and recreational facilities.
Previous investigations have cited claims of discrimination under the Texas Fair Housing Act, potential financial harm to investors, and possible violations of consumer protection laws.
KERA News has reached out to EPIC for a statement and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Upcoming Hearing
The Collin County Commissioners Court is scheduled to hold a hearing on Monday afternoon to further discuss the EPIC project.
