ARLINGTON, Texas – Professional baseball player Jake Burger has chosen a new jersey number with the Texas Rangers that carries significant personal meaning.
A Personal Tribute
Burger is set to wear the number 21 this season in remembrance of his daughter, Penelope, who was born with Down syndrome. This decision not only honors her but also aims to raise awareness about the condition.
Understanding Down Syndrome
Down syndrome, commonly known as trisomy 21, arises from an extra copy of chromosome 21 caused by an anomaly during cell division. It affects many aspects of a person’s health and development.
Penelope is anticipated to undergo heart surgery later this year, making this tribute even more poignant for Burger and his family.
Burgers’ Commitment to Advocacy
According to reports, Burger and his wife, Ashlyn, are in the process of establishing a foundation dedicated to Down syndrome to provide support and resources for affected families.
Previously, Burger donned number 30 while with the Chicago White Sox and number 36 with the Miami Marlins before his recent trade to the Rangers.
Jake Burger’s Reflections
In a statement reflecting on his choice, Burger said, “For me, this is the first time I can pick a number that’s not just close to my heart, but close to a lot of people’s hearts. And for me, it’s trying to spread awareness and try to get the word out about Down syndrome and how people can get support. I’m just really proud of this number and really excited to wear this and represent my daughter.”
