Mayor faces backlash for supporting dallas cowboys at local meeting

Local Resident Blames Mayor’s Sports Fandom for Township Issues

UPPER DARBY TOWNSHIP, Pa. – During a recent council session, a resident attributed several of the township’s challenges to Mayor Ed Brown’s allegiance to the Dallas Cowboys.

Unconventional Critique at Council Meeting

On April 2, 2025, at the Upper Darby Township council meeting, resident Richard Bly took the floor to voice an unusual complaint against Mayor Brown. His remarks centered not on city policies, but rather on the mayor’s sports affiliation.

Bly, donning a Philadelphia Eagles shirt celebrating their Super Bowl LIX victory, expressed his frustrations with the mayor’s affiliation with the Cowboys, a rival team. “See this is what happens guys, residents of Upper Darby Township, when you elect a Cowboys fan to your government,” Bly stated, highlighting the Cowboys’ long-standing reputation for underperformance in recent years.

The Dallas Cowboys: A Legacy of Mixed Results

The Dallas Cowboys, purchased by Jerry Jones in 1989, experienced significant success in the early 1990s, capturing three Super Bowl titles in six years. However, the team has faced challenges in recent decades, failing to progress beyond the divisional round of the playoffs since their last Super Bowl victory in 1995.

In contrast, the Philadelphia Eagles have enjoyed a more favorable trajectory, competing in four Super Bowls and winning two championships over the years. This modern success has fueled a spirited rivalry between the two fanbases.

Football Feuds Extend Beyond the Field

Bly’s statements were received with a mix of humor and seriousness, as he emphasized how the mayor’s team preference reflected on his leadership capabilities. “You see what type of leadership they have and that’s what you put your trust in. A Cowboys fan. Sickening,” Bly remarked, underscoring the passionate rivalry that extends beyond just sports, impacting local sentiment.

This sentiment was echoed during Philadelphia’s Super Bowl parade, where Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro jokingly referred to the Eagles as “America’s Team”, a well-known moniker associated with the Cowboys.
