Mobile Health Unit Launched in Southeast Texas

by Texas Recap Contributor

In a groundbreaking move to address healthcare disparities in rural areas, the Health Center of Southeast Texas has unveiled a new mobile health unit aimed at providing essential medical services to underserved communities. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on June 3, 2025, in Liberty County, a region that has long struggled with limited access to quality healthcare.

The Need for Mobile Health Services in Southeast Texas

Southeast Texas, particularly rural areas like Liberty County, has faced significant healthcare challenges for decades. Residents in these areas have limited access to primary care providers, and long travel distances to major cities make it difficult to receive timely medical treatment. The region also suffers from higher rates of chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, which disproportionately affect lower-income populations.

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, rural communities across the state often have fewer healthcare providers per capita, leading to health disparities that impact everything from life expectancy to infant mortality rates. The creation of the mobile health unit is seen as a critical response to these challenges, providing residents with on-site access to a variety of medical services, from preventive care to routine screenings.

Services Offered by the Mobile Health Unit

The mobile health unit is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology that allows it to provide a broad range of services to patients. These include:

  • Routine physical exams

  • Vaccinations and immunizations

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol screenings

  • Diabetes and blood sugar tests

  • Mental health counseling

  • Family planning services

The mobile unit is staffed by experienced healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses, and mental health professionals. It will travel to different communities within Liberty County and surrounding areas, visiting towns and neighborhoods where healthcare access is limited.

“We know that many people in these communities have to travel long distances to get the care they need. This mobile health unit brings those services directly to them,” said Dr. Ashley Williams, director of the Health Center of Southeast Texas.

Addressing Rural Healthcare Inequality

The launch of the mobile health unit comes at a time when rural healthcare inequality is a growing concern across the United States. According to the National Rural Health Association, more than 20% of the U.S. population lives in rural areas, yet rural counties only have about 10% of the country’s doctors. These disparities are especially pronounced in Texas, where the state’s rural population often lacks access to critical medical services.

The mobile health unit is one part of a larger strategy to address these gaps in care. The Health Center of Southeast Texas is also expanding its partnerships with local healthcare providers and community organizations to improve education on preventive health measures and ensure that patients have access to affordable medications.

Building Community Trust

One of the key challenges in providing healthcare to rural populations is building trust within the community. Many rural residents are skeptical about medical interventions, particularly those offered by outside organizations. The Health Center of Southeast Texas has worked closely with local leaders and community groups to ensure that the mobile unit is a trusted and reliable resource for residents.

“We’ve spent years building relationships with the community,” said Dr. Williams. “It’s essential that people feel comfortable coming to the mobile health unit, and we’re committed to offering services in a way that respects their privacy and dignity.”

Future Plans and Expansion

While the mobile health unit’s initial rollout focuses on Liberty County, the Health Center of Southeast Texas has plans to expand its reach to other parts of the state. The goal is to have several additional mobile units in operation within the next five years, targeting underserved areas throughout Texas.

“We’re excited to be able to offer this service, and we know there’s so much more work to do,” Dr. Williams added. “Our vision is to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to accessing healthcare.”

The mobile health unit is a hopeful step forward for rural Texans, who often face significant obstacles in accessing affordable and timely care. It represents a critical effort to close the healthcare gap and ensure that all residents have the opportunity to live healthy, fulfilling lives.
