Record-Breaking Travel Expected in Texas Over Memorial Day Weekend

by Texas Recap Contributor

AUSTIN, Texas — A record 3.7 million Texans are expected to travel during the Memorial Day holiday weekend from May 22 to May 26, 2025, marking a 3% increase from last year, according to AAA Texas. This projection represents the third consecutive year of record-setting travel for the state. Nationwide, an estimated 45.1 million Americans will take to the roads, skies, and rails, making it the busiest Memorial Day travel period on record.

Most Texans—approximately 3.2 million—are expected to drive to their destinations. Another 300,000 residents will travel by air, while about 160,000 plan to use trains, buses, or cruise lines. AAA attributes the travel surge to a strong economy, a rise in leisure travel demand, and lower fuel prices. Gas prices in Texas are currently about 50 cents lower than they were a year ago, offering some relief for motorists.

The busiest travel days are anticipated to be Thursday and Friday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. To avoid the worst traffic, AAA recommends traveling early in the day. One of the most congested corridors in Texas is expected to be Interstate 45 South between Houston and Galveston, particularly on Sunday, May 25.

Top domestic destinations for Texans include Orlando, Seattle, New York City, Las Vegas, and Miami. For international travelers, Rome, Paris, London, Athens, and Vancouver are among the most popular picks for the extended holiday.

AAA urges travelers to plan ahead, monitor weather and traffic updates, and ensure that vehicles are properly serviced before departing. With millions expected to travel across Texas, early preparation and patience will be crucial to enjoying a safe and smooth holiday weekend.
