Texas Measles Outbreak Surpasses 300 Cases, Spreads to New Counties

by Texas Recap Contributor

Texas is grappling with its most significant measles outbreak in decades, as confirmed cases have risen to 309, marking a substantial increase since the outbreak’s onset in late January. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) reports that the virus has now spread to 14 counties, with recent cases emerging in Midland, Garza, Hale, and Hockley counties. The majority of infections are among unvaccinated individuals, particularly children and adolescents.

Gaines County remains the epicenter, accounting for 211 of the total cases. The outbreak has led to 40 hospitalizations and one confirmed death of a school-aged child who was unvaccinated and had no known underlying health conditions.

Health officials emphasize the critical importance of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is 97% effective after two doses. Despite this, only two of the 309 confirmed cases were among individuals who had received both doses of the vaccine. The vast majority of cases are in unvaccinated or under-vaccinated populations.

In response to the outbreak, DSHS and local health departments have intensified efforts to increase vaccination rates. Public awareness campaigns are underway, and access to immunization services has been expanded. Schools are reinforcing proof-of-vaccination policies, and health officials are urging parents to ensure their children are up to date with their vaccinations.

The outbreak has also prompted concerns about the potential for further spread beyond Texas. Neighboring states, including New Mexico and Oklahoma, have reported cases linked to the Texas outbreak. Health experts warn that without increased vaccination efforts, the outbreak could persist and expand.
